White Teeth Zadie Smith Quotes

How to interpret this assignment question...details added.?

The question is:

Fictional experiment has long since ceased to be an avant-garde outrage and become an available convention' (Malcolm Bradbury The Modern British Novel 1878-2001 p538). To what extent do you agree?

I know what avant-garde means, so thats not a problem. I tried to find Bradbury's book in the library to find out where the quote can from and the book is not available, so i cant really get the drift of his argument. The module that im studying is called modern british fiction.

Books that are on the syllabus are:

The Loneliness of the long distance runner- alan sillitoe
The girls of slender means- muriel spark
Albert Angelo- B.S. Johnson
White teeth- Zadie Smith
The curious incident of the dog in the nightime- mark haddon
Divided Kingdom
What a carve up- jonathan coe

These are the books we have to read for the module called modern british fiction. I listed them in case anyone else has read the books and can help with the question.

I haven't read the books in question but stick with me on this one, I've done an English degree and taught English in a secondary school.

I believe the question is asking you to explore the conventions of different styles of writing which apper to be experimental. For example, realism, modernism and post-modernism. You could also discuss forms of writing if appropriate such as diary style, letters, first person etc. Reading up on these styles and observing how they relate to the books on your syllabus would be a good start.

The question also asks you to discuss whether you feel that:
1) Such writing styles were outrageous initially.
2) Are no longer outrageous
3) Whether it is now easy (or too easy!) to pick from experimental styles when writing fiction.

I would interpret outrageous as a short hand for original or unique in this case.

Make sure that when writing your essay you make a point, illustrate your point with a quote and then explain how the quote illustrates your point. Don't forget to include quotes from both the novels you are reading and any other sources and reference according to the standards set out by your department.
